Bio: Shawna Vernisie, MA, LCAT, MT-BC is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and Licensed Creative Arts Therapist at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Marywood University (Scranton, PA) and her Master of Arts in Music Therapy at New York University (New York, NY). She has previously worked in various medical facilities where she worked within adult oncology, outpatient infusion, palliative care, and physical rehabilitation. Shawna also works with Art Beyond Sight, where she provides music therapy services to children with visual impairments. Currently, Shawna specializes in working within pediatric critical care, surgical care, and palliative care. In addition to her daily work, she also serves as Internship Director. Shawna has served on the Executive Board of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Music Therapy Association and currently serves as the clinician member of the Research Committee; she is also a member of the International Association for Music and Medicine. Shawna has presented at national and regional conferences on the topic of pediatric music therapy, and has professionally written and published multiple works on the topic of medical music therapy. In 2017, Shawna was presented with the prestigious President’s Award for Exceptional Patient/Customer Experience given by Northwell Health, which is presented to one employee who exemplifies the mission and values of Northwell Health by providing exceptional care to patients. Two years later, Shawna was presented with the Recent Alumni Award of Excellence for Professional Achievement from her alma mater, Maywood University. Shawna is passionate about advocating for music therapy and creative arts therapies, and will be perusing a Master of Health Administration degree at Hofstra University with a mission to further advance creative arts therapy practices in healthcare facilities.

Bio: Dr. rer. medic. Friederike Barbara Haslbeck, Ph.D., NICU-MT, SFMT, DGMT is a senior research fellow and clinical music therapist at the Department of Neonatology, University Hospital Zurich and University of Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland. She is a trained musician (violin and piano), and a clinical music therapist specialized in neonatal music therapy. She received her doctoral degree with summa cum laude from the University Witten-Herdecke, Department of Medicine in Witten, Germany.
During her training, she developed a family-integrated music therapy approach in neonatal care: Creative Music Therapy with preterm infants and their parents (CMT). She implemented this approach at various German and Swiss neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and developed and runs the certified NICU training program in CMT. She developed a keen focus on researching music in neonatal care. As a senior research fellow and part of the newborn research group Zurich, she studies the effect of CMT on the neurodevelopment in preterm infants and psychosocial adaption in parents with a randomized controlled clinical trial as well as the effect of various musical and vocal interventions to improve neurodevelopment outcomes for preterm infants with a Cochrane review.
She lectures at the University of the Arts, Department of Music, Zurich, and at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Department of Health in Zurich, Switzerland. She is holding numerous publications on neonatal music therapy. Dr. Friederike Haslbeck received a doctoral fellowship from the Ev. Studienwerk Villigst, e.V.; Germany, and the World Federation of Music Therapy doctoral students award.
